About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Durham, NC, Guglhupf Restaurant offers a delightful blend of European-inspired flavors with a distinctly German twist, making it a must-visit for breakfast, brunch, and casual dining enthusiasts. This charming spot is more than just a restaurant — it’s a vibrant beer garden, a cozy cafe, and a bustling bakery, all wrapped into one inviting space at 2706 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd.

From the moment you arrive, Guglhupf envelops you in warm, comforting aromas of freshly baked pastries and rich coffee. The menu is a treasure trove for those who crave a harmonious mix of traditional and inventive dishes. Popular offerings like the Buttermilk Pancakes are perfectly fluffy, while the Eggs Benedict Event options, such as the Avocado Benedict, introduce a fresh, creamy twist on a classic favorite. For those seeking savory satisfaction, the Pork Schnitzel - Holstein Style and the hearty Wurst Teller bring authentic German flavors alive with tender, expertly prepared meats and authentic sides.

Breakfast aficionados will find solace in choices like the Shiitake Mushroom Omelette, bursting with earthy mushrooms and melted gruyère cheese, or the Eggs Goulash, which combines poached eggs with a rich medley of mushrooms, tomato, and potato to create a comforting plate full of depth and heartiness. Those attracted to lighter fare will appreciate the Kippered Salmon plate, where smoky fish pairs elegantly with herbed quark and fresh greens on freshly baked mehrkorn bread.

Guglhupf’s bakery is nothing short of exceptional, offering an array of irresistible pastries such as the Apple and Cheese Danish, the Brezel with house-made beer cheese and mustard, and the delicate Fruit Tart that’s both visually stunning and decadently sweet. Don't miss the Almond Joy Latte — a perfect marriage of nutty, chocolaty flavors in a smooth espresso drink that carries you through the day.

The ambiance is equally noteworthy. Guests often enjoy the spacious outdoor seating area, especially on warm days when the beer garden vibe enhances the dining experience with casual, alfresco comfort. Inside, the space offers a cozy, bustling atmosphere where the scent of baked goods mingles with the soft hum of friendly conversation.

Though Guglhupf operates with a unique counter-service setup — where you order your food at the counter rather than through table service — this arrangement adds to its lively, informal charm. Several guests have noted the popularity of the spot leads to lines during peak morning hours, but the wait is part of the experience, offering an anticipation that’s truly rewarded by the quality and flavor of the food. Many visitors recommend arriving early to secure a spot or making a beeline for a table while standing in line to maximize your time in this beloved local gem.

Real customer experiences beautifully underscore Guglhupf’s appeal: Marci Fradkin praises the “tasty and yummy” breakfast with its distinct German influence, while Veronika Mazur raves about the incredible bakery selection and perfect outdoor seating. Andrew Stevic highlights the friendly staff and exceptional bakery treats he and his date enjoyed, including a memorable fruit tart. Johnavae Campbell’s account of fresh, appetizing dishes like the fall omelette and pumpkin pie latte reflects the kitchen’s commitment to vibrant, seasonal flavors. Even with busy mornings and occasional wait times, patrons warmly recommend Guglhupf for its delicious food, engaging atmosphere, and uniquely authentic culinary experience.

Whether you’re craving a leisurely brunch, a caffeine boost with a creative latte, or a hearty plate that transports you to a European beer garden, Guglhupf Restaurant in Durham is a standout destination that promises to awaken your palate and nourish your spirit.

Very popular breakfast choice we got there before they’re opened and I was already a line. There is no table service for ordering food. You must stand in a line and order your food and it’s hard to get a refill of coffee. I found the food to be quite tasty and yummy with a slight German influence at least on the breakfast menu many of the seats are outside. There’s a small inside area. The outside has a lovely garden with cool weird statues. There’s a separate line for the bakery so you might wanna get in that line 1st get a snack while you wait over a half hour to put in your order.

Came here for the first time on a date. The decor, food, and staff were wonderful. The bakery attached was an amazing experience as well. We purchased a fruit tart and some cookies from the bakery afterwards.

Guglhupf is a gem! Even on a busy Friday morning, we found parking and got a table without a wait. The bakery selection is incredible — so many tempting options. I especially loved the peach blueberry scone — absolutely delicious. The main menu has something for everyone, and the outdoor seating was perfect on a hot day. Great food, great atmosphere. Highly recommend!

We came here for breakfast — just like the hundreds of other people standing in line that morning. Right away, I’ll say this: you’ve got to come early. Expect to wait at least 30 minutes, sometimes more. We waited about 40 minutes before getting in. Honestly, they could make the line process a bit smoother. While we were waiting, I noticed a bunch of empty tables, but the line was still barely moving. It also wasn’t super clear at the end where exactly you’re supposed to go — like whether to walk up to the counter or wait to be seated. It would really help if they had more printed menus outside, so people could decide what they want ahead of time instead of taking forever at the counter. Best move? Check out the menu online before you go. Now, about the food. We ordered a strawberry cheese danish, which was really good. For our daughter, we got pancakes. My wife had the lamb gyro (or something similar), and I ordered a tuna sandwich on sourdough. Though technically, it was more like a tuna spread than a sandwich — but it was delicious. Not super filling, but really tasty. My wife liked her gyro too, though she said it was a bit awkward to eat — maybe they could plate it differently. Our daughter loved her pancakes and the cherry cheese danish — both were excellent. So for food, we’d give it 5/5. Atmosphere-wise, it’s a fun spot — lively and busy, especially in the morning. I’d love to come back during Oktoberfest to really feel the vibe. Definitely another 5/5 for atmosphere. Now for service — that part I wasn’t thrilled about. You have to get your own water, utensils, and napkins, though they do bring the coffee to your table. I just don’t really get why they ask for 18–25% tips at the counter when you’re basically doing half the work yourself. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it did feel a bit off. Still, it didn’t ruin the experience — just something they could improve on.

This was a great brunch spot. We ordered the fall omelette and avocado smash Benedict for food and a pumpkin pie latte and iced matcha for drinks. All items were fresh and appetizing. Lines seemed long but they were moving and the servers were also quick with bringing the food. Id suggest securing a table while waiting in line.

Wow is an understatement, outstanding bakery, and food great menu. We enjoyed it so much. We are returning for breakfast before we fly out on Sunday morning. It was so good. I had to tell my cousin’s wife who is German about it so they can visit when they are up in this area. This is definitely on a go to list now every time we come up to visit our granddaughter at Duke.

Great place with great food. Very interesting how this restaurant is arranged. For me that is more like a cafe style. You can order food at the window with a cash register or from girls nearby with a device and pay for your order right there. Your order will be brought to you by a waiter and just like in a cafe, you choose the place where you want to sit. I like it very much! We didn't have to wait long for our food and coffee, even though the restaurant looked crowded. I really love croissants and I have to say that almond croissant was surprisingly exactly what a croissant should be - soft inside and crispy outside. The coffee was also very tasty. Kippered Salmon was amazing! I will definitely come back to this place for dinner.

Me and my partner went over the weekend! It’s a beautiful place with a book shop in front. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was fantastic! I can’t wait to go back in warmer weather to sit outside, but if you don’t mind the cold they have heaters and complimentary blankets if you like sitting outside.
